Cards Set Two Program Records to Open Indoor Campaign
December 06, 2025 | Track & Field
Alba Cuns Iglesias (women’s triple jump) and Elsingi Kipruto (men’s 5000m) leapt to the top of the Louisville record books.
The University of Louisville track & field teams opened the 2025-26 indoor track & field season on Saturday, splitting between the Commonwealth College Opener in Louisville and the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston.
Alba Cuns Iglesias (women's triple jump) and Elsingi Kipruto (men's 5000m) began the indoor campaign by setting a pair of program records, while Breanna Braham started her collegiate career off with a Louisville freshman record in the women's 300m.
More detailed highlights from both meets can be found below.
COMMONWEALTH COLLEGE OPENER
The Cardinals opened the day at the Commonwealth College Opener at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville, where the teams combined for eight event victories and 20 top three individual finishes.
Cuns Iglesias was the story of the day for the Cardinals, making her return to action after missing all last season due to injury and picking up wins in both the women's long jump and triple jump while setting a new program record in the triple jump. After taking the long jump victory with a personal-best mark of 5.87m (19-3.25), the redshirt junior bounded to a massive leap of 13.25m (43-5.75) on her third attempt of the triple jump competition, narrowly bettering the previous record of 13.24m (43-5.25) that was set by Seidre Forde in 2008.
The Cards also saw Sharvari Parulekar go over 13 meters indoors in the triple jump for the first time in her career, moving up to third in program history with a mark of 13.02m (42-8.75) to finish as the runner-up.
Braham began her collegiate career with a record-setting performance of her own, moving up to second in program history while also breaking the Louisville freshman record in the women's 300m, winning the event with a blistering time of 38.69. Chelsea Williams (39.06) and Zylah Sturdivant (39.49) followed to place second and third, respectively, as the Cards took the top three spots in the event.
In addition to Braham's 300m win, the Louisville sprints group accounted for three more event victories throughout the day as Jalasia Lewis won the women's 400m in 57.76, McKenzie Bell broke the tape in the women's 600m in 1:33.67, and the quartet of Williams, Bell, Braham, and Sturdivant combined for a time of 3:47.53 to win the women's 4x400m relay.
Louisville also got a dominant showing in both the men's and women's pole vault, as Ashley Callahan and Lucas Couron both claimed event victories.
Callahan cleared a bar of 4.33m (14-2.5) in her first indoor meet in a Louisville uniform to beat out Iliana Triantafyllou, who set a personal record of 4.23m (13-10.5) on her way to a second-place finish. On the men's side, Couron posted a final mark of 5.21m (17-1) as Ty McPhail placed second with a mark of 5.06m (16-7.25) and Luther Mogelvang finished third with a mark of 4.76m (15-7.25) to close out the podium sweep.
The Cards also swept the top three spots in the men's 800m with a trio of men making their first collegiate indoor appearance. Brendan Ruggles notched a time of 1:55.81 to finish just ahead of Josiah Hortin in 1:55.83, while Gavin Rockwell placed third in 1:58.24.
Louisville rounded out the day with two more individual wins as Maya Follmer broke the tape in the women's 60m hurdles in 8.83 and Ellie Maurer picked up the victory in the women's mile with a time of 4:59.19.
SHARON COLYEAR-DANVILLE SEASON OPENER
While the majority of the team competed in Louisville, a limited number of distance runners contested the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, one of the premier indoor distance meets in the nation.
Kipruto carried his momentum from a historic freshman cross country season over to the indoor oval, winning the open section of the men's 5000m with a program-record time of 13:29.37, knocking over 10 seconds off the previous record that was established in 2024 by Ian Kibiwot.
Geoffrey Kirwa also raced the 5000m in Boston, crossing the line in 13:49.80 for the second-fastest time of his young career on the indoor track, while Gustav Bendsen and Spenser Wolf leapt into the top 10 in program history in the event as well. Bendsen's time of 14:11.62 ranks him eighth in program history, while Wolf's time of 14:12.42 moves him to ninth all-time.
In the women's 5000m, Maddie Seaby and Nancy Chepleting kicked off their indoor season with a pair of personal-bests, as Seaby ran a 16:15.65 to move to fourth in program history while Chepleting clocked a 16:19.50 to claim the fifth-best time in the Louisville record books.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals will return to action after the new year with Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational that will take place at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville on Jan. 9-10.
