No. 8 Cardinals Sweep Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Chloe Chicoine had 14 kills, hitting .414 and Cara Cresse added nine kills and four blocks to lead No. 8 ranked Louisville to a 3-0 sweep of Notre Dame in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball action Wednesday night in the Joyce Center.

With the 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 win, the Cardinals move to 17-4 and 8-2 in ACC. Louisville hit .282 as a team with two aces and seven blocks. Kalyssa Blackshear added eight kills and three blocks. Setter Nayelis Cabello had 33 assists, six digs and a block. Libero Kamden Schrand had two aces and match-high 14 digs.

Notre Dame moves to 8-11 and 5-6 in the conference. ND hit .183 with four aces and eight blocks. The Irish were led by Sydney Helmers 11 kills and six digs. Morgan Gaerte added 10 kills and six digs.

The two teams, ACC travel partners, will meet again this Saturday at 3 p.m. in the KFC Yum! Center.

In the first set, Notre Dame used a 5-0 run to take a 7-2 lead before Louisville had to call timeout. The Cardinals responded with a 9-2 run to go up 11-10. The teams traded points until a 3-0 run put the Cards up 18-16 and UofL led from that to the 25-21 win. Louisville hit .211 with a pair of blocks.

Chloe Chicoine had eight kills in the second set that was marked with a scorer's error, who didn't catch the Cardinals out of rotation for seven straight points served by Kamden Schrand. A 20+ minute delay righted the situation but cost the Cardinals eight points. UofL made up the deficit and tied at six and then took the lead at 9-8 and built the lead to as many as six at 19-13. Payton Petersen connected with Nayelis Cabello for the set point and the 25-19 win.

Louisville did not have the lead in the third set until a kill by Kalyssa Blackshear put the Cards up 11-10. While Louisville spread the lead to three at 19-16 on a Chicoine kill. The Irish chipped away at the lead, tying at 22 on two straight aces by Maisie Alexander to force Louisville to call timeout. The teams tied again at 23 befroe a kill by Cara Cresse followed up by a block by Cabello and Cresse gave Louisville the 25-23 set and match point.
