Rylie Wollerton notches her team-best eighth goal of the season, but Cards fall 2-1 at No. 9 Duke
DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 19-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-1 to No. 9 Duke in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest Friday evening at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Â
Senior Rylie Wollerton scored her team-best eighth goal of the season to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, but the host Blue Devils answered with a pair of goals to prevail 2-1. In the game, Duke held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-1 edge in corners. Louisville goalkeeper Emily Young collected two saves while Duke's Kaiya Chepow had one stop.
Â
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively, entering halftime in a scoreless tie with one shot on goal apiece and Duke owning a 2-1 edge in penalty corners through the first 30 minutes.
Â
Louisville broke through four minutes into the third quarter when the Cardinals recovered a Duke outlet attempt and Gigi Edwards sent a long feed from outside the 25-yard line and found Rylie Wollerton by herself in the circle. The senior forward settled the ball and delivered a shot into the top left corner of the cage for her team-best eighth goal of the season.
Â
The Blue Devils (8-4, 3-2) answered with just under a minute remaining in the third quarter with a penalty corner goal by Shae Wozniak to even the score at 1-1.
Â
Duke pulled ahead courtesy of a goal by Sofia Fidalgo Schiop with 4:40 remaining in regulation to make the score 2-1.
Â
With 2:16 left to play, Young was lifted in favor of an extra field player and Louisville gained possession, but the Cards were unable to register a shot in that span. Â
"Disappointing result," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Our effort was there and we were able to put some great passages together. We had an opportunity to close out the game but unfortunately our mental lapses and not taking care of the ball resulted in Duke capitalizing. We need to regroup quickly with a tough game ahead."Â
The Cardinals (6-6, 0-3 ACC) will continue their ACC road swing with a Sunday matchup at No. 3 North Carolina.
