Nancy Chepleting, Geoffrey Kirwa Named ACC Freshmen of the Week
September 17, 2024 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville cross country teams garnered a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference weekly awards as Nancy Chepleting was named the ACC Women's Freshman of the Week and Geoffrey Kirwa was tabbed the ACC Men's Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
In her collegiate debut, Chepleting finished fifth overall in the women's 6K at the Southern Showcase, crossing the line in a time of 16:50.5 to help the Cardinals to a runner-up team finish with a total of 68 points.
The native of Eldoret, Kenya became only the second Louisville woman in program history to earn the honor since Dorcas Wasike was named ACC Women's Freshman of the Week twice over the course of the 2016 season.
Kirwa also made his first appearance in NCAA competition at the Southern Showcase, covering the 8K course in 24:23.6 to place 16th individually and power the Louisville men to a sixth-place team finish.
The distinction marks the fourth straight year that a Louisville male has been named ACC Freshman of the Week during the cross country season after Ian Kibiwot (2021), Jack Moore (2022), and Innocent Ntwali (2023) were recognized in each of the last three seasons.
Chepleting, Kirwa, and the rest of the Cardinals will return to action in just under three weeks when the teams split between the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Oct. 4 and the Live in Lou Classic on Oct. 5.
