Sophia Parker delivers her first collegiate goal, Brandelynn Heinbaugh collects six saves in double-OT loss at No. 4 Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-1 to No. 4 Maryland in double overtime as Hope Rose's goal with 1:18 to play lifted the Terrapins to a 2-1 win in both teams' season opener Friday evening at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
Â
"This was a great game for the opening weekend," said Louisville head coach Justine Sowry. "Maryland is a tough opponent and playing them at home was always going to be a challenge. At times we absorbed pressure but as expected, we continue to fight and have grit. We did have some opportunities in overtime and unfortunately, they executed a beautiful goal at the end of the game. I am very proud of our effort and performance and it's something that we can build upon on Sunday and throughout the season."
Â
Redshirt sophomore Sophia Parker connected on her first collegiate goal and graduate transfer Brandelynn Heinbaugh collected six saves as the Cardinals battled for nearly 80 minutes on the road. In the game, Maryland (1-0) held a 13-4 advantage in shots while Louisville had a 4-3 edge in penalty corners.
Â
The teams played through a scoreless first quarter in which the Cardinals' defense stood strong as Maryland held a 3-0 advantage in shots with Heinbaugh picking up a save.
Â
The Cards (0-1) regrouped and found their offensive rhythm in the second quarter, earning their first penalty corner of the contest midway through the frame. They capitalized on the opportunity when redshirt sophomore Sophia Parker collected a rebound off of Maryland goalkeeper Alyssa Klebasko's pads and sent a shot to the far post for her first collegiate goal to give Louisville the early 1-0 lead.
Â
The Terps answered a minute later when a goal by Josie Hollamon evened the score at 1-1. Â
Â
Neither team was able to break through the rest of the second quarter, entering the break with the contest knotted at 1-1 and Maryland holding a 6-3 lead in shots and a 2-1 edge in penalty corners.
Â
After a scoreless third frame, the teams played through a stalemate in the fourth quarter with Heinbaugh turning back both of Maryland's shots on goal.
Â
With the score still tied at 1-1 after regulation, the contest entered a sudden-victory 7v7 overtime period. Both teams created scoring opportunities and Louisville earned three straight corners in the final two minutes of the initial extra period, but came up empty and the game moved to a second overtime.
Â
The teams continued to battle throughout the second overtime until the Terrapins broke through when Hope Rose deflected Annemijn Klijnhout's shot for the game-winning goal.
Â
Louisville will conclude its season-opening road swing on Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Cardinals face American University.
