KJ Byrd, Anna Panenko, and Iliana Triantafyllou will contest the junior championship meet set for Aug. 27-31 in Lima, Peru.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Three University of Louisville track & field student athletes are set to compete at the 2024 U20 World Athletics Championships, which will take place from August 27-31 in Lima, Peru.
KJ Byrd, Anna Panenko, and Iliana Triantafyllou will all represent their home nations at the highest level of international junior competition to conclude the 2024 outdoor track & field season.
Byrd, an incoming freshman from North Carolina, is set to participate in the men's decathlon as a member of Team USA after being crowned the USATF U20 champion in June by accumulating a personal-best total of 7,536 points.
The decathlon will be split between August 29 and 30 with the competition set to begin on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. ET with the 100m.
Panenko will contest the women's triple jump for her native country of Estonia after punching her ticket to Lima by finishing as the runner-up in the event with a mark of 13.25m (43-5.75) at the Estonian National Championships. The incoming freshman boasts a personal-best leap of 13.42m (44-0.5) that she recorded in July to place third at the Baltic Team Championships President's Cup.
The qualification rounds of the women's triple jump will begin at 12:50 p.m. ET on August 28, and the top 12 finishers will advance to the finals on August 31 at 6:10 p.m. ET.
After a successful freshman season at Louisville, Triantafyllou recorded a clearance of 4.10m (13-5.25) to win the women's pole vault Greek U20 Championships and qualify for the U20 World Championships after placing fifth in the same event at the Greek Championships earlier in the summer. Earlier in the year, the rising sophomore set the Louisville freshman record with a personal-best bar of 4.20m (13-9.25) at the NCAA East Regionals.
The pole vault will begin with the qualification rounds on August 27 at 5:00 p.m. ET, with the top 12 finishers slated to move on to the finals at 5:00 p.m. ET on August 29.
