Franklin Previews Upcoming Cross Country Season at Fall Sports Media Day
August 13, 2024 | Cross Country
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville director of track & field and cross country Joe Franklin met with local media on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the upcoming cross country season at UofL's annual Fall Sports Media Day.
"We're super excited about this academic year," said Franklin. "There are a lot of positive things we have coming. We have a good recruiting class and a good schedule built for cross country."
Franklin enters his second season at the helm of the Louisville program after spending 16 seasons at the University of New Mexico.
The men's squad will be led by senior Ian Kibiwot, who placed sixth nationally to earn First Team All-American honors in the men's 10000m at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships after missing the 2023 cross country season due to injury.
On the women's side, the Cardinals return Rylee Penn and Layla Roebke who last year led the team to their best finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional since 2017.
The Cardinals will open their season on the first weekend of October, splitting between the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational on Oct. 4 and the Live in Lou Classic on Oct. 5.
