Cardinals Outlast Tennessee in Final Spring Match

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Led by Charitie Luper and Anna DeBeer's 28 kills, the University of Louisville volleyball team outlasted Tennessee to win 24-26, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-11 in the final spring exhibition match Saturday evening in the L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

Luper and DeBeer each had 14 kills with DeBeer adding nine digs and three blocks. Reese Robins had 10 kills and nine blocks. Setter Elle Glock had 34 assists and libero Elena Scott recorded 19 digs.

In the tightly contested first set, UofL used a five-point run to go up 19-16 on the Lady Vols and forced UT to call timeout. The Cards got to set point at 24-22 on a kill by Reese Robins. But the Vols scored four straight including an ace to go up 25-24. After the Cardinals called timeout, UT scored the final point to take the set 26-24.

The Lady Vols used a 6-0 serving run by Cate Schnell to take a four point lead at 19-15 in the second set. The Cards pulled within one at 23-22 on a tip by Hannah Sherman but the Voils pushed forward to the 25-23 win to go up 2-0.

The Cardinals had a 5-0 run early in the third set to make up a deficit and tie at 11 which forced a UT timeout. The teams continued to trade points until the Vols scored two straight points to go up 21-20 and UofL called timeout. Coming out of the pause, Cara Cresse connected with setter Elle Glock for a kill to tie before a kill by Charitie Luper gave the Cards back the lead. Cresse tied the score at 23 with a kill at the net. A missed attack by Tennessee gave UofL set point but Tennessee managed to tie. A kill by Phekran Kong put the Cards up 25-24 but UT answered again. Luper went cross court for a kill and an ace by Kamden Schrand gave the Cards the 27-25 win.

In the fourth set, the Cardinals established a slim lead at 18-15 but the Vols were able to tie at 20. UofL outscored Tennessee 5-1 down the stretch for the 25-21 win to tie the sets at two all.

In the fifth set, UofL tore out to a 10-3 lead but struggled to contain a determined UT squad that managed to pull within two at 13-11 before falling 15-11 to give the Cards the 15-11 win.
