Louisville Concludes Sunshine State Invitational
March 30, 2024 | Rowing
SARASOTA, Fla. – The University of Louisville rowing team wrapped up the Sunshine State Invite with a first place finish in the varsity eight petite final Saturday at Nathan Benderson Park.
Â
"We didn't respond as well as the other crews to the conditions yesterday," said UofL head coach Derek Copeland. "That is disappointing because these are known variables that we prepare for. Today's conditions were very good, and although we didn't get the opportunity to see growth in less favorable conditions, we did get a chance to focus on a few areas that we fell short on yesterday."
Â
The varsity eight team got the morning started with a first-place finish in the petite final. Coxed by Izzy Hussey, Lexi Bernard, Claire Carver-Ritter, Evey Peplowski, Kaylie Leonard, Macy Whisenand, Payton Stinson, Madeline Giron and Isabella Ulloa raced to a time of 6:41.56, finishing 4.52 seconds ahead of Jacksonville State.
Â
In the second varsity eight grand final, the Cards stroked a time of 6:52.24, just 1.06 seconds behind Boston College.
Â
The varsity four register a petite final time of 7:42.07, under a second back from Old Dominion for a seventh place showing. In the final race of the day, the second varsity four finished fourth in the petite final, clocking in at 7:57.85.
Â
"We are still working to unlock speed in the fours," said Copeland. "We started to see something at our last race weekend, and still need to take the next steps in those boats."
Â
The Cardinals will return to action on April 20-21 when they travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn. For the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Regatta.
Â
"We expect to get home and pick up some of the pieces on the Ohio," said Copeland. "Our next race is in a few weeks and we definitely need to stay on the gas."
