Freshmen Lead Charge on First Day of Boston Split Weekend
February 09, 2024 | Track & Field
Cade DeWitt tied his own school record in the men’s pole vault while Temi Ariyo set a new freshman record in the women’s mile.
BOSTON, Mass. – A pair of freshmen etched their names into the program record books as the University of Louisville track & field teams completed the first day of their split weekend in Boston.
Cade DeWitt tied his own school record in the men's pole vault at the Eagle Elite Invitational, as his final clearance of 5.32m (17-5.5) matched his mark from the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational two weeks ago, while also earning him the first event victory of his collegiate career.
The Cardinals also got a record-setting performance at the TRACK at New Balance from Temi Ariyo, who shattered the previous freshman record in the women's mile by clocking a time of 4:51.65.
Zoe Yeast claimed the second event victory of the day for Louisville, recording a season-best heave of 19.23m (63-1) to win the women's weight throw.
The Cardinals rounded out the day at the Eagle Elite Invitational with two fourth-place finishes, as Noah Koch recorded a throw of 18.98m (62-3) in the men's weight throw and Ty McPhail cleared 5.02m (16-5.5) in the men's pole vault.
Competition will resume tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with the beginning of the day's field events, while track events will continue at 11:00 a.m. with the women's distance medley relay.
Louisville was also well-represented at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday morning, as Maddie Seaby finished as the runner-up in the women's unseeded 5000m in 16:45.20.
Action will resume tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. with three Cardinals toeing the line in the men's unseeded 5000m.
