Kibiwot Blazes to 5000m School Record to Cap Boston Split
February 10, 2024 | Track & Field
BOSTON, Mass. – Ian Kibiwot set a new school record in the men's 5000m as the University of Louisville track & field teams capped off their first true road trip of the season on Saturday evening after splitting between a pair of meets in Boston.
Kibiwot's time of 13:41.10 in the men's 5000m pushed him to a 35th-place finish among a loaded field at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational and bested the previous program-best of 13:42.24, which was set by Edwin Kibichiy in December of 2016.
The effort marks the third school record of the senior's career in a Louisville uniform after setting the outdoor 3000m record in 2022 and the outdoor 10000m record a season ago.
The Cardinals also closed out competition on Saturday at the Eagle Elite Invitational, as Jayden Ulrich continued her run of dominance in the women's shot put, finishing as the runner-up in the event and bettering her previous personal-best mark of 17.70m (58-1).
Soledad Jean earned a spot on the podium in the women's high jump, posting a season-best clearance of 1.77m (5-9.75) to claim a third-place finish.
On the track, the Cards were led by Kiyah Yeast, who finished fourth in the women's 200m with a time of 23.73 that stands as the fifth-best performance in school history, while Jaylen Cole clocked a time of 21.25 in the men's 200m to move up to fourth on the all-time leaderboard.
The 4x400m relay of Taylor Boggess, Yeast, Ruby Nwosu, and McKenzie Bell recorded a time of 3:42.07 that gives the foursome the third-fastest mark in program history.
The Cardinals also got a pair of top-five finishes in the triple jump, as Grigoris Nikoalou placed fourth in the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.86m (48-9), while Rachel Darden set a new personal-best of 12.33m (40-5.5) on her way to a fifth-place showing in the women's iteration of the event.
After finishing fourth in Friday's men's shot put competition, Noah Koch rounded out the top five in the men's weight throw with a heave of 17.13m (56-2.5) to finish off the split weekend for Louisville.
Select athletes will represent the Cardinals next weekend in Albuquerque, N.M. at the USATF Indoor Championships, while the majority of the squad will begin preparation for the ACC Indoor Championships, which will take place from Feb. 22-24 in Boston.
