Cards take early lead, but Syracuse scored a pair of unanswered goals to win 2-1
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 16-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-1 at No. 15 Syracuse in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at J.S. Coyne Stadium Friday afternoon.
Â
Louisville (5-6, 1-2 ACC) will continue league play on Sunday when the Cardinals travel to No. 3 Virginia for a 12 p.m. contest.
Â
The Cards took the lead in the third minute of the game behind a goal from Chloe Plumb, but the Orange (7-3, 2-2) answered with a pair of goals by Bo Van Kempen to secure the win.
Â
Louisville got on the scoreboard after drawing the first penalty corner of the game. Plumb got the corner started and moved into position to deflect Izzy Bianco's initial shot for her third goal of the season.
Â
Syracuse countered with 19 seconds left in the first quarter with a penalty corner goal by Bo Van Kempen to even the score at 1-1.
Â
Neither team was able to record a shot in the second quarter, sending the game into halftime tied at 1-1 with Syracuse owning a 3-1 edge in shots on goal and a 2-1 advantage in penalty corners. Brandelynn Heinbaugh registered two first half saves.
Â
Louisville maintained possession through the opening six minutes of the third quarter, but could not capitalized on four penalty corner attempts. With under five minutes remaining in the third quarter, Syracuse got a second penalty corner goal from Van Kempen to move ahead 2-1. Â Â Â
Â
The Cardinals' defense withstood a Syracuse attack, absorbing a pair of corners in the fourth quarter.
Â
In the game, Syracuse outshot Louisville 12-4 with a 6-1 edge in shots on goal while the teams were even with five penalty corners apiece. Brandelynn Heinbaugh posted four stops in the contest for the Cardinals.
"We were beaten by the better team today," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We were a little too individualistic at times by not playing two-touch hockey and not providing good options. Defensively, it was disappointing that we didn't execute our game plan. We need to regroup for Sunday's game."
