Fourth Quarter Goal Lifts No. 3 Virginia to 1-0 Win Over No. 16 Louisville
October 06, 2024 | Field Hockey
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 16-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell to No. 3 Virginia 1-0 in an Atlantic Coast Conference battle Sunday afternoon at UVA's Turf Field.
Â
"A tough day today," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Sports and life can sometimes feel unfair. Another game where we left it all out there and you could say we let it slip for 12 seconds. I am proud of the effort and the performance we put out on the field today. We have to be more consistent and be ready to play in every game. We have such a great group of young people and we have to keep growing and getting stronger together."
Â
The teams played through three scoreless quarters before Virginia broke through with a goal by Taryn Tkachuk in the opening minutes of the fourth frame. Overall, the third-ranked Cavaliers (10-1, 4-1 ACC) held a 7-6 edge in shots while the Cardinals (5-7, 1-3) earned four penalty corners and did not concede any defensive corners. Louisville goalkeeper Emily Young collected three saves in the contest with Virginia's Tyler Kennedy registered one stop en route to the shutout.
Â
The first two quarters of the contest saw Virginia hold a 3-2 edge in shots and Louisville with the lone corner awarded in the first half as the team entered halftime knotted at 0-0. After the break, Louisville had multiple scoring chances, drawing three straight corners midway through the third quarter, but could not capitalize on the opportunities.
Â
The Cardinals will continue their conference slate against top-five opponents when they play host to No. 2 North Carolina Friday at 3 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
