Aimee Plumb registered a pair of goals in 3-2 double OT loss at Wake Forest
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C – Faye Janse's goal in double overtime lifted host Wake Forest to a 3-2 win over the University of Louisville in an Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey game Sunday at Kentner Stadium.
Â
Aimee Plumb scored a pair of goals as the Cardinals battled to a 2-2 tie in regulation, but the Demon Deacons prevailed in double overtime to secure the victory. In the game, Wake Forest outshot Louisville 10-6 while the Cards held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal and a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners. With the loss, Louisville drops to 5-9 on the season and 1-5 in league play.
Â
"It was a tough and frustrating contest," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Wake disrupted the way we like to play and we were unable to maintain possession or create sustained attack."
Â
Wake Forest (5-7, 1-3 ACC) took an early lead after capitalizing on the first penalty corner of the game with a goal by Lena Keller with under four minutes left to play in the first quarter.
Â
The second quarter featured a total of three shots between the teams, with each resulting in a goal. Cardinals struck in the first minute of the frame when they connected on a penalty corner. Lauren Masters got the play started and Tatum Kroon dished the ball to Aimee Plumb who maneuvered past a defender before sending a reverse stick shot into the cage to even the score at 1-1.
Â
Wake quickly countered three minutes later, this time with a goal by Ana Franco who gave her team a 2-1 lead.
Â
With 1:09 left in the second quarter, Plumb delivered the equalizer again when she converted a penalty stroke for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
Â
After a total of four goals through the first two quarters, both teams had opportunities in the second half of play, but could not break through and the score remained tied at the end of regulation.
Â
The teams entered a sudden-victory 7v7 overtime period that saw Louisville come up empty after drawing a trio of penalty corners in the initial extra frame. Wake Forest was awarded a corner in the closing minute, but Louisville goalkeeper Brandelynn Heinbaugh denied their shot on goal to send the contest into another overtime period.
Â
Wake Forest ended the stalemate just over four minutes into the second overtime when Janse gained possession inside the circle and delivered a shot into the top right corner of the cage for the 3-2 win.
Â
"The game had a lot of momentum shifts and we were unable to capitalize in the critical moments," said Sowry. "Again, it came down to the "inches" and we came off second best. I cannot question our effort, but we need to be able to execute. We have the ability to change the course of our season with what we do next."
Â
Louisville will return to Trager Stadium on Friday at 3 p.m. when the Cardinals play host to No. 11 Duke in their home finale.
