Track & Field Caps Off Weekend at Rod McCravy Memorial Invite
January 13, 2024 | Track & Field
Ty McPhail and Cade DeWitt led the way with a pair of podium finishes in the men’s pole vault.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track & field teams closed out competition at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invite on Saturday afternoon at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center.
Over the course of the two-day event, the Cardinals totaled eight podium finishes and saw 12 athletes set new personal-best marks.
"I thought we saw some encouraging performances this weekend, particularly in the field events," said director of track & field and cross country Joe Franklin. "We saw some of the top performances in the NCAA from Jeremiah [Willis] and Jake [Burkey] last night, and we continue to compete well with the rest of our jumps group as well as in the pole vault."
Ty McPhail and Cade DeWitt continued their early-season success in the men's invitational pole vault with the duo both clearing 5.18m (17-0) to place second and third, respectively.
After posting stellar showings in both of the long jump events on Friday, the Cardinals saw two third-place finishes in the triple jump on Saturday, as Riley Burger leapt 12.24m (40-2) in the women's triple jump event and Grigoris Nikolaou recorded a mark of 14.93m (48-11.75) in the men's iteration of the event.
The Cards rounded out their weekend in the field with two more fifth-place finishes as Jayden Ulrich made her Louisville debut in the women's shot put with a mark of 15.97m (52-4.75) and Paul Kallenberg cleared a bar of 4.58m (15-0.25) in the men's unseeded pole vault.
On the track, McKenzie Bell clocked a time of 56.68 to take third in the women's 400m, while Trevor Holbrook also placed third in the men's 400m with a time of 49.69.
"While we do have work to do to get to where we want to be as a team, I think our coaching staff and our student athletes can be pleased with where we are at this point in the season," added Franklin.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 19 at the Bellarmine Open, which will be staged at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center.
