Louisville earns its sixth straight win of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Minna Tremonti's goal just 41 seconds into overtime lifted the fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 2-1 win over VCU Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium. With the victory, the Cardinals extend their season-opening win streak to six games.
Emilia Kaczmarczyk tallied an assist on Tremonti's game-winner and added a goal of her own to help lead the Cardinals offensively in the game which saw Louisville outshoot VCU 12-1 while overcoming a 1-0 deficit.
The Rams (4-1) quickly jumped on the scoreboard less than a minute into the game after earning their lone penalty corner of the contest. Georgia Carr-Brown's initial shot was tipped by Mora Marrero to give VCU the early lead.
Much of the first half was played in the midfield with neither team able to generate many scoring opportunities. The Cards entered halftime trailing 1-0 despite holding a 3-1 edge in shots and a 2-1 advantage in corners in the first half.
Louisville broke through just over a minute into the third quarter when they earned their first corner of the frame. Aimee Plumb got the play started and Tatum Kroon provided the stop for Kaczmarczyk who blasted a shot past VCU goalkeeper Sheridan Messier. The fifth-year senior's second goal of the season evened the score at 1-1.
The Cards continued to apply pressure outshooting the Rams 8-0 and holding a 5-0 edge in corners, but VCU's defense kept them at bay with Messier collected four stops in the game.
With the contest still knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the teams entered a 7v7, sudden-victory overtime period. Louisville attacked quickly, moving the ball down to the circle where Kaczmarczyk sent a feed to the right post to find Tremonti who was waiting to connect on her first goal of the season.
"We did not play Louisville field hockey, and we won," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "That's it in a nutshell. To be perfectly honest, I was flabbergasted at how we played in the first half – incredibly disappointed. In the second half, we played a little bit more like Louisville field hockey, but right now we're getting in our own way."
The Cardinals (6-0) will return to action on Friday, Sept. 15 when they open Atlantic Coast Conference play at No. 2 North Carolina.
