September 01, 2023 | Men's Soccer
Louisville scored once in each half to win 2-0 at UNC Greensboro.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 13th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team stayed perfect on the young season with a 2-0 victory at UNC Greensboro on Friday night.
Louisville (3-0-0) recorded its third consecutive shutout to open the season, the first time the Cardinals have started the year with three straight clean sheets since 2009.
Gage Guerra got the scoring started for the second consecutive match. The junior took a pass from Sander Roed and found the net in the ninth minute for his second tally of the year.
The Cardinals had more chances to extend the lead in the first 45 minutes, but held onto the 1-0 lead at the half despite recording eight shots and five corners.
Louisville got on the board again in the opening minutes of the second half. Konstantinos Georgallides dribbled toward the end line before cutting a pass back into the box. Quinton Elliot got on the end of the pass and fired home his first career goal to double the advantage to 2-0.
The Louisville defense handled the rest as Alex Svetanoff kept the Spartans out of the scoring column. The redshirt-freshman turned aside five on-target shots from UNC Greensboro (0-2-1) to add to his scoreless streak in goal.
The Cardinals held a 16-9 advantage in shots on Friday and 7-4 on corner kicks.
Louisville will now prepare for its annual rivalry match with Kentucky on Tuesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
