September 01, 2023 | Field Hockey
Louisville earns its second straight top-10 win with a 2-1 victory over Princeton in the ACC/Ivy League Crossover
PHILADELPHIA – The ninth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated No. 10 Princeton 2-1 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the ACC/Ivy League Crossover at Penn's Ellen Vagelos Field.
Â
The win marks Louisville's second straight victory over a top-10 opponent as the Cards improve to 3-0 on the season.
Â
"Obviously this was a positive result, getting a win against a young and talented Princeton team," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "There were some great passages of play, and we hope we can continue to improve our attacking opportunities to be able to put games away and not always put pressure on our defensive unit."
Â
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard after drawing back-to-back penalty corners with under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. On their second attempt, sophomore Chloe Cuzzupe tipped senior Julie Kouijzer's initial shot for her first goal of the season.
Â
The Tigers (0-1) countered four minutes later when Talia Schenck's goal evened the score at 1-1 with 38 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Â
Louisville struck again in the opening minute of the second quarter when senior Minna Tremonti took the ball down the right side of the field and into the Cardinals' circle where dished a feed to Tyler Everslage who sent a shot into the cage, putting the Cards back on top. The freshman's first collegiate goal would ultimately stand as the game winner.
Â
UofL carried the 2-1 lead into halftime after outshooting Princeton 8-3 and holding a 5-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
The second half was evenly contested with the Cardinals owning a 5-4 edge in shots and the teams earning one penalty corner apiece – Louisville's penalty corner came in the third quarter and Princeton was awarded one the fourth.
Â
Overall, Louisville's offense tallied six shots on goal while Princeton registered four. Current ACC Defensive Player of the Week Merlijn van der Vegt collected three saves in the game and Princeton's Robyn Thompson had four stops.
Â
The Cardinals will wrap up the weekend on Sunday when they take on host Penn at 1:30 p.m.
