van der Vegt Named ACC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of Louisville's Merlijn van der Vegt has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week in the league's first weekly award of the season.

Last weekend, van der Vegt (Ultrecht, The Netherlands) recorded a 0.50 goals against average, 11 saves and a .917 save percentage to help the ninth-ranked Cardinals notch a pair of wins in their season opening weekend which was highlighted by a 1-0 shutout at No. 2 Northwestern.

After collecting a pair of saves in Friday's 3-1 win over Northeastern, the graduate transfer goalkeeper turned in a stellar performance in a road game against the second-ranked Wildcats, collecting nine saves en route to the shutout.

Louisville (2-0) will continue its three-game road stretch next weekend with a trip to Philadelphia where the Cards will take on No. 10 Princeton Friday and Penn Sunday.
