Men’s Track and Field Ties for Third Place at ACC Outdoor Championships, Women Finish Ninth
May 13, 2023 | Track & Field
The Cards set seven school records on the final day of competition, with 11 individuals and two relays earning All-ACC honors.
RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Louisville track and field teams capped off an unforgettable weekend at the ACC Outdoor Championships in Raleigh on Saturday, with the men's team finishing in a tie for third place with 89.5 points and the women's squad placing ninth with 39 points.
The performance stands as the best finish and highest point total for the men's team at the ACC Outdoor Championships since joining the conference prior to the 2015 season and also saw them finish only 2.5 points behind first-place Clemson.
"I couldn't be more excited about the way this squad came out and competed this weekend," said head coach Dale Cowper. "They were not only tremendous with their respective performances, but also the unified support and energy they displayed throughout the weekend. I couldn't be more excited for this group as we move toward the NCAA Championship Rounds later this month."
The Cards kicked off the final day of the three-day competition with the men's high jump, taking the top two spots in the event after doing the same at February's ACC Indoor Championships.
Trey Allen won his third straight ACC title in the event, clearing a final height of 2.25m (7-4.5) on his first attempt that puts him a tie for the NCAA lead and breaks the previous Louisville record of 2.24m (7-4.25) that was set in 2018 by Damar Robinson.
Joining Allen atop the podium was Brion Stephens, who earned runner-up status after soaring over a bar of 2.22m (7-3.25) to set a new personal-best and tie Tone Belt's Louisville freshman record. Luke Nichols rounded out the Louisville scorers in the event, taking fifth with a height of 2.05m (6-8.75).
On the track, the men's 100m finals saw Sterling Warner-Savage surge out of the blocks to a time of 10.13 that tied his own school record set earlier this season at the Tom Jones Memorial, earning the silver medal and eight points for the Cardinals.
Another school record fell in the women's 200m later in the afternoon, as Kiyah Yeast clocked 23.48 to place fifth and earn second team All-ACC honors while felling the previous record of 23.54 set by Raven Grant in 2017. Nolan Macklin also earned second team All-Conference in the men's 200m, placing fourth in 20.91 after setting a new school record in the event on Thursday during the preliminaries.
Katie Martin continued to lower her own program record in the women's 400m hurdles, placing second in the conference for the second straight season with a time of 57.22 after posting the fourth-fastest qualifying time yesterday.
The Cardinals also set three new school records in the relay events on the afternoon beginning with the women's 4x100m relay team of Taylor Herbert, Yeast, Olivia Jenkins, and Synclair Savage who placed fifth overall with a time of 44.55 that lowered the record that was set two weeks ago at the Clark Wood Invitational.
The men's 4x100m immediately followed by dipping under 39 seconds for the first time in school history as the foursome of Macklin, Cameron Miller, Jeremiah Willis, and Warner-Savage sped to a time of 38.87 and a third-place finish.
The final event of the meet saw a hotly contested race in the men's 4x400m relay that resulted in a runner-up finish for the team of Noah Carmichael, Miller, Robert Joseph, and Isiah Pantiere and secured a top-three team finish for the Cardinals. The group's time of 3:03.44 shatters the previous program record by exactly three seconds and places them in the top 20 nationally for the event.
The rest of the day in the field saw four Cardinals score points for the team in the discus throw, with three of those scorers coming on the men's side.
Adar Sheere and Bryan Hudson placed fourth and sixth with throws of 56.84m (186-6) and 55.11m (180-9), respectively, to earn second team All-ACC laurels, while Jorge Contreras Nazario finished seventh with a launch of 52.00m (170-7).
The women's iteration of the competition featured Katherine Coffey, who placed sixth to be recognized as second team all-conference as well, recording a toss of 51.07m (167-6) on her first attempt of the competition.
Cardinals with NCAA qualfiying marks will return to action in two weeks at the NCAA East Region Preliminaries while the rest of the team will turn their attention to the offseason. Participants for the preliminary meets will be announced by the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee during this coming week.
