May 11, 2023 | Track & Field
The Cardinals also saw two new school records set on Thursday afternoon.
RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Louisville track and field teams wrapped up the first of three days of competition at the ACC Outdoor Championships on Thursday afternoon, led by a trio of runner-up finishes from Synclair Savage, Aliyah Welter, and Jeremiah Willis.
At the conclusion of Thursday's action, the Louisville women sit third overall with 19 points after four events with the men earning 9.5 points through five events to hold in 10th place.
Louisville claimed the silver medal in both iterations of the long jump with both Savage and Willis recording the second top-three finish of their careers at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Savage leapt 6.32m (20-9) to finish second on the women's side, while Willis jumped 7.83m (25-8.25) to finish as the male runner-up.
Welter finished second in the women's pole vault, clearing a height of 4.28m (14-0.5) to set a new season best. This marks the fourth straight year the Cardinals have had a female vaulter on the podium at the outdoor conference championships and is the third top-five finish at the meet for Welter in her career.
The Cards also had a solid day on the track, as Katie Martin and Nolan Macklin blazed to new school-record times while qualfiying for Saturday's finals in their respective events.
Martin lowered her own school record in the women's 400m hurdles set earlier this season at the Tom Jones Memorial, running 57.25 in Thursday's preliminary round to record the fourth-fastest qualifying time heading into the finals.
Macklin continued his stellar freshman campaign, clocking a school-record time in the men's 200m of 20.85 that was the sixth-fastest time in the preliminaries. The mark bested the previous Louisville record of 20.90 by Donald McClinton Jr. that had stood since 2019.
Kiyah Yeast was the third Cardinal on the day to qualify for finals, running a new personal-best time of 23.59 in the women's 200m, the seventh-fastest mark in the qualifying round.
In the men's decathlon, Paul Kallenberg holds him the lead through the first five events with a total of 4,063 points after a dominant performance that featured new personal-bests in the 100m, high jump, and shot put. The sophomore finished in the top two among decathletes in all five of Thursday's events, posting the top mark in four of them.
The Cardinals rounded out the day with three other athletes scoring points for the team, led by Carly Pujol who cleared two personal-best heights in the women's pole vault on her way to a final clearance of 4.18m (13-8.5) and a seventh-place finish.
The men's pole vault saw Ty McPhail tie for seventh place as he vaulted to a height of 4.88m (16-0), while Zoe Yeast recorded an eighth-place finish in the women's hammer throw with a heave of 57.23m (187-9).
The second day of competition will begin at 11:30 a.m. ET when Kallenberg resumes the men's decathlon with the 110m hurdles, before the track events begin with the preliminary round of the women's 100m hurdles at 6:00 p.m. ET. The day's events will continue to be streamed on ACCNX.
