Cards Make Statement on Senior Day at Clark Wood Invitational
April 29, 2023 | Track & Field
Louisville set three school records and earned 12 event victories on the final day of competition.
LOUISVILLE, Ky – On a day that 20 seniors were honored for their contributions to the program, the University of Louisville track and field teams concluded their regular season with a bang on the second and final day of the Clark Wood Invitational.
Saturday saw the Cardinals set three new school records and win 12 events, bringing the team's weekend total to 18 while also setting 30 new personal-best marks over the two-day event.
The first record of the afternoon fell in the women's 4x100m relay as the quartet of Taylor Herbert, Kiyah Yeast, Olivia Jenkins, and Synclair Savage blazed to victory in a time of 44.60 that eclipsed the previous record of 44.91 set in the same meet last season and also set a new meet record.
The women's 4x400m relay record for both the school and the meet was then broken in another event victory with McKenzie Bell, Yeast, Ruby Nwosu, and Katie Martin clocking a time of 3:40.99 to sneak by the previous record of 3:41.06 ran in 2017.
Martin made the most of her Senior Day as she was also crowned the champion of the women's 400 after dominating the field with a time of 53.93 that ties the program record set by Margret Harris back in 2013.
A meet record was also set in the men's iteration of the 4x100m relay as Isiah Pantiere, Cameron Miller, Nolan Macklin, and Sterling Warner-Savage clocked 39.19 for the second-fastest mark in school history, just shy of the mark the same group set at the Texas Relays earlier this month.
Warner-Savage, Robert Joseph, Miller, and Noah Carmichael then teamed for a mark of 3:08.61 to win by nearly five seconds in the men's 4x400m relay, coming just short of both the meet and school record.
The 100m dash also provided some fireworks for the hometown crowd as a total of eight Cardinals qualified for the finals with two Louisville athletes winning gold.
The women's side saw Herbert, Jenkins, and Synclair Savage cruise into the finals before Herbert clocked a personal-best 11.51 to tie the meet record and claim victory after also posting the fastest preliminary time earlier in the day.
The Cardinals then secured a podium sweep in the men's 100m keyed by Warner-Savage's time of 10.22, Macklin's time of 20.27, and Jaylen Cole's time of 10.40, all of which were wind-assisted. JeremIah Willis and Miller also qualified for the final round, with Miller's wind-aided preliminary time of 10.25 standing as the second-fastest time in the prelims behind only Warner-Savage.
The Cardinals rounded out the day on the track with Isaac Kiprop's first-place finish in the men's 3000m steeplechase in 9:07.03 and Spenser Wolf following close behind to take second in 9:18.37, while Pantiere finished second in the men's open 400m in 47.61.
The teams' success carried over to the field events as the Cardinals took both top spots in the seeded high jump, led by Soledad Jean's meet record clearance of 1.81m (5-11.25) in the women's event that also stands as a personal best for the sophomore.
Trey Allen then followed suit, securing first place in the men's event after his first attempt and taking a shot at both the Louisville record and national lead before finishing with a mark of 2.17m (7-1.5).
Grigoris Nikolaou continued his hot streak in the men's triple jump, bounding to a personal best of 15.87m (52-0.75) for his third straight win in the event.
The Cardinals earned their final event victory of the day in the men's shot put as Bryan Hudson recorded a heave of 17.36m (56-11.5) to beat out Jorge Contreras Nazario, who finished as the runner-up with a mark of 16.96m (55-7.75).
Louisville athletes also secured both runner-up spots in the seeded pole vault as Aliyah Welter cleared 4.22m (13-10) in the women's event and Ty McPhail soared to a final height of 5.08m (16-8) on the men's side.
Paul Kallenberg finished just behind McPhail to take third in the men's seeded pole vault with a clearance of 4.93m (16-2) after also finishing second in the men's javelin throw with a personal-best launch of 55.78m (183-0) on a weekend in which he competed in six events.
The Cards will now begin preparation for the postseason before returning to the track for the ACC Outdoor Championships on May 11-13 in Raleigh, N.C.
