Warner-Savage Sets 100m Mark at Tom Jones Memorial to Close Out Split Weekend
April 15, 2023 | Track & Field
Six Cardinals won individual event crowns at the Jim Freeman Louisville Invitational.
The University of Louisville track and field teams wrapped up their split weekend on Saturday as the Cardinals earned six event victories and 31 total top-five finishes at the Jim Freeman Louisville Invitational along with recording 33 personal-best performances over the course of three meets on the weekend.
Sterling Warner-Savage ruled the day, taking down the Louisville record in the men's 100m at Florida's Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville. The senior's time of 10.13 was good for seventh place in a highly competitive field and bested the previous record of 10.15 that he set last season in the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round.
Back home in Louisville, the Cardinals were headlined by three athletes who recorded top-three finishes in two separate events, with each of them also claiming an event victory.
Madeline Castleberry kicked off the day's running events with a win in the women's 3000m steeplechase in 11:11.81 before doubling back a few hours later and earning a runner-up finish in the women's 3000m in 10:27.40, smashing her previous personal best by almost 30 seconds.
Louisville native Jaylen Cole etched his name into the record books, beginning his afternoon with a third-place finish in the men's 100m in a time of 10.40 that makes him the third-fastest Cardinal in the event in school history. Later in the day, the freshman won the men's 200m in 20.99, which stands as the third-best mark in program history.
Grigoris Nikolaou dominated the jumps, taking first in the men's triple jump with a mark of 15.25m (50-0.5) after leaping a personal-best of 7.32m (24-0.25) on his way to a third-place finish in the men's long jump.
Freshman Noah Carmichael was first in the men's 400m, notching a time of 47.13 that stands as a top-ten time in program history, while Isaac Kiprop ran 9:02.91 in the men's 3000m steeplechase to earn a gold medal of his own. Sadie Morris claimed the final Louisville event victory on the day, running a season-best time of 2:09.63 in the women's 800m.
Ryan Farrell also earned a podium finish in the 800m, placing second in 1:50.60 in the men's 800m, while Jourdin Edwards finished as the runner-up in the women's 400m hurdles in a personal-best time of 1:00.36.
The Cardinals also continued to fare well in the throwing events after yesterday's solid showing in the hammer throw, led by Bryan Hudson who placed in the top three in both the men's shot put and discus throw. The senior recorded throws of 18.04m (59-2.25) to take second in the shot put and 54.89m (180-1) that secured him the bronze medal in the discus throw.
In the women's discus throw, Madelyn Horne was the runner-up with a personal-best heave of 51.55m (169-1) while Katherine Coffey followed close behind in a mark of 49.41m (162-1) to place third. Claire Bushur also earned a third-place finish with a mark of 14.30m (46-11) in the women's shot put.
Three Cardinals finished in the top five for the women's pole vault, led once again by Aliyah Welter's final height of 4.15m (13-7.25) that gave her a second-place finish in the event.
Autumn Bell continued the Cards' string of freshman success, placing third in the women's triple jump with a personal-best leap of 12.15m (39-10.5), while Luke Nichols earned the final podium spot in the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.00m (6-6.75).
Closing out the meet on the track was the men's 4x400m relay team of Farrell, Dylan Christian, Zach Cader, and JB Terrill, who combined for a time of 3:19.05 on their way to second place in the event.
The Cardinals will return to action next weekend on Apr. 21-22 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana Invitational.
