March 09, 2023 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Six athletes from the University of Louisville track and field teams are slated to compete in the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships from Mar. 10-11 in Albuquerque, N.M. at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Louisville's qualifiers include Trey Allen, Cameron Miller, Synclair Savage, Brion Stephens, Sterling Warner-Savage, and Aliyah Welter.
"The NCAA Championships are one of the most exciting opportunities a student-athlete encounters during their respective collegiate career," said head coach Dale Cowper. "I'm looking forward to seeing these six represent UofL at the highest level this weekend in Albuquerque."
Both days of competition will be streamed live on ESPN+, along with live updates being provided throughout the competition from the official NCAA Track and Field social channels. Video of the top events will be posted on the NCAA Championships YouTube channel after the live broadcast concludes each day. The meet will also be re-aired on ESPNU at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 12 and again at 7 p.m. ET on Monday, March 13.
Friday's competition for the Cardinals will kick off with the women's field events, beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET with Welter competing in the women's pole vault, where she currently stands 11th nationally with a mark of 4.35m (14-3.25) at the ACC Indoor Championships. The women's long jump will follow at 6:00 p.m. and will feature Savage, who enters the meet seeded seventh with a school record mark of 6.52m (21-4.75) at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational.
The action will then move to the track with Warner-Savage toeing the line in the men's 60m preliminaries at 9:15 p.m. with his time of 6.55 at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational that tied his own school record giving him the sixth-fastest time this season. The men's 200m preliminaries will begin at 10:25 p.m. where Miller enters the competition with a time of 20.27 at the ACC Indoor Championships that stands as the nation's fastest time at sea level this season and ties him for second-fastest in the nation with converted times.
Warner-Savage and Miller will attempt to advance to Saturday's finals in their respective events by placing in the top eight in the preliminary round, with the 60m finals taking place at 9:10 p.m. ET and the 200m finals at 9:50 p.m. ET.
Saturday will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET with the men's high jump, the only event with multiple Cardinals competing in Allen and Stephens. Allen currently holds the second-highest mark in the nation with his clearance of 2.27m (7-5.25) at the Commonwealth College Opener that set a new program record. Stephens earned the silver medal at the ACC Indoor Championships to Allen with a Louisville freshman record height of 2.21m (7-3) that ties him for ninth nationally entering the weekend.
The top eight finishers for each event will be honored as first team All-Americans, while the athletes finishing 9-16 will earn second team All-America distinction. The national office will announce USTFCCCA National Athletes and Coaches of the Year for the indoor season on Monday, Mar. 21.
