March 16, 2023 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Tony Miller was named the Southeast Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2022-23 indoor season, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association on Thursday. He is the first recipient of any indoor track regional award from UofL since their inception in 2016.
Miller, in his fourth season as the sprints and hurdles coach for the University of Louisville track and field team, earned regional honors after guiding two of his athletes to berths in the NCAA Indoor Championships and overseeing four new school records by the men's sprinters.
At the national meet, Cameron Miller capped off his dominant indoor season with a fourth-place finish in the men's 200m in 20.29 to earn first team All-American honors. Miller reset the Louisville school record in the event four times this season, culminating in a time of 20.27 at the ACC Indoor Championships that earned him the ACC title, set a new ACC Championships meet record, and was just one-hundredth of a second off the conference record of 20.26 set back in 2000. He also broke the Louisville record in the men's 300m, cruising to a time of 32.96 to earn a runner-up finish in his Cardinals debut at the Commonwealth College Opener.
Sterling Warner-Savage joined Miller at the national meet, earning 13th place and second team All-American honors in the 60m after qualifying for his third consecutive NCAA Indoor Championships. The senior tied his own school record in the event at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational, clocking 6.55 to win the event, while also notching a fourth-place finish in the event at the ACC Indoor Championships.
The men's 4x400m relay rounded out the program records for the men's sprints squad as the foursome of Noah Carmichael, Miller, Robert Joseph, and Isiah Pantiere blazed to a time of 3:07.79 to capture silver at the ACC Indoor Championships.
Freshman Nolan Macklin also made a strong impression in his first season under Miller, recording a time of 20.96 in the 200m preliminaries at the ACC Indoor Championships to break the Louisville freshman record before finishing sixth in the 200m finals.
Miller also found success with the women's team during the indoor season as two more indoor school records fell on the women's side and three individuals earned all-conference laurels.
The 4x400m relay team of Katie Martin, Taylor Herbert, Jourdin Edwards, and Tiriah Kelley ran 3:37.71 to earn third at the ACC Indoor Championships and set a new school record in the event.
Kelley also broke the Louisville record in the women's 200m at the conference meet, clocking 23.38 to place fourth while Kiyah Yeast earned sixth in the 200m and Taylor Herbert was fourth in the 60m to join Kelley in being recognized as second team All-ACC.
Miller and the rest of the Cardinals return to action starting tomorrow afternoon with Georgia Tech's Yellow Jacket Invitational for the first meet of the outdoor season.
