Tennis Travels to North Carolina for Conference Matchup

Cards play at No. 1 North Carolina and No. 11 Duke.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team travels to North Carolina for to compete in two matches this weekend against No. 1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Friday at 5 p.m. ET and No. 11 Duke in Durham, N.C. on Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Cardinals (7-4) fell in two tough matches this weekend with a 4-3 loss to then-ranked No. 29 Clemson and a 7-0 loss to then-ranked No. 30 Georgia Tech. UofL took Clemson down to the final set on Friday, after winning the doubles point. Rhea Verma was undefeated against Clemson, winning doubles with her partner Andrea Di Palma 6-4 and winning at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-1. Tyra Richardson outlasted Clemson at the No. 4 spot 6-4, 7-5. The final point came down to Maria Campos, who won the second set 7-6 (7-5) after dropping the first set 6-2. Clemson won the third set against Campos to clinch the match. Against Georgia Tech, the Cards were defeated in close matches at doubles with Sasha Gorchanyuk and Campos falling in a tiebreak set 7-6 (7-5). The Yellow Jackets swept the singles, but Verma played three sets eventually falling 6-0, 4-6, 2-6.

No. 1 North Carolina is coming off a two-win weekend defeating Virginia 4-1 and Virginia Tech 4-3. The Tar Heels entered singles 0-1 after dropping the doubles point to Virginia but quickly took the 3-1 lead after wins from Elizabeth Scotty, Anika Yarlagadda, and Fiona Crawley. UNC won the match behind a three set win from Carson Tanguilig. Against Virginia Tech, the Tar Heels won the doubles point and earned another point behind a 6-1, 6-0 win from Crawley. Reese Brantmeier outscored Virginia Tech 6-1, 6-2 to earn a third point for UNC. The Tar Heels clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win from Tanguilig.

No. 11 Duke split the weekend with a 4-3 win over Virginia Tech and a 4-3 loss to Virginia. Against Virginia Tech, Duke clinched the doubles point with a win from the duo of Iuliia Bryzgalova and Georgia Drummy and the pair of Chloe Beck and Cameron Morra. The Blue Devils earned another point with a 6-0, 6-2 win from Brianna Shvets. In a three-set thriller, Beck put Duke up 3-0 with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 win. Emma Jackson clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-6 (10-8) victory. Duke dropped the doubles point against Virginia, but Duke evened the match with a quick 6-2, 6-1 win from Beck. The Blue Devils took the 2-1 lead with a win from Jackson. Shvets earned the final point for the Blue Devils.
