Allen Wins High Jump, 200m Records Fall on Day One of the ACC Indoor Championships
February 23, 2023 | Track & Field
Men in first, women in seventh after Day One
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trey Allen captured first place in the men's high jump to lead the University of Louisville track and field teams on the first day of the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships Thursday at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center. After the first day of competition, the men's squad leads the pack with 25.5 points, while the women sit in seventh with nine points.
Allen's mark of 2.21m (7-3) put him at the top of the podium for the first indoor conference championship of his career after coming in third at last year's meet. Louisville also produced the silver medalist in the event as Brion Stephens also finished with a clearance of 2.21m (7-3), besting his own freshman record. Luke Nichols' mark of 2.09m (6-10.25) tied him for seventh place, bringing the nation's top men's high jump squad to a total of 19.5 points in the event.
The Cardinals also saw the school record in the women's 200m dash broken during the preliminary round, as both Tiriah Kelley and Kiyah Yeast shattered the previous record of 23.87 set by Raven Grant in 2017. Kelley's mark of 23.55 eclipsed the record that Yeast had set in the heat before with her time of 23.58, allowing both women to punch their tickets to the 200m finals on Saturday afternoon.
In the men's 200m preliminaries, Cameron Miller tied his own Louisville record, running 20.33 to also set a new ACC Championships meet record, while Nolan Macklin finished sixth in a freshman record time of 20.96 to join Miller in Saturday's finals.
Louisville also picked up a pair of bronze medals, as Aliyah Welter earned a lifetime-best of 4.35m (14-3.25) to claim third in the women's pole vault and Ian Kibiwot also clocked a personal-best time of 13:52.74 in the 5000m, coming out of the unseeded section of the event that produced the top five finishers.
Paul Kallenberg currently stands in second place in the men's heptathlon through the first day of competition, earning a personal best in all four events. His total of 3,269 points currently sits just 75 points off the lead heading into day two.
Katherine Coffey finished seventh and Zoe Yeast finished eighth in the women's weight throw to round out the scorers for the Cardinals. Coffey notched a personal-best mark of 19.46m (63-10.25), while Yeast recorded a throw of 19.36m (63-6.25).
The second day of competition will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the continuation of the men's heptathlon, with the men's 800m preliminaries capping off the evening at 7:30 p.m. The day's events will be available for viewing on ACC Network Extra.
