LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's tennis team won the doubles point and five of the singles matches to defeat Austin Peay 6-1 Friday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
The Cards won the doubles point when the duo of Rhea Verma and Andrea Di Palma dispatched Jana Leder and Melody Hefti 6-0 at No. 1. Jamilah Snells and Cici Xin clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Denise Torrealba and Yu-Hua Cheng.
In singles, the Governors evened the score when Xin had to retire at No. 4. Verma regained the lead when she beat Hefti in dominate fashion 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Tyra Richardson picked up the third point for the Cards with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cheng at No. 5. Di Palma clinched the win for Louisville winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 against Leder. Sasha Gorchanyuk defeated Asia Fontana 6-4, 6-2. Jamilah Snells won 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot against Denise Torrealba.
"It's always good to get a win," said head coach Mark Beckham. "I felt like we played good tennis. We still have a few things to clean up, but I think we are in a good spot as far as each match that we play, we're getting a little bit better. I want to see that continue against a very good NCAA-tournament caliber team in Memphis on Sunday. Things are going to get serious here, but I like where we're at right now and hopefully we can keep the momentum going."
The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday against Memphis at 12 p.m. ET at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
