Payton Named to Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List

The junior is one of 55 players on the preseason watch list.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville catcher Jack Payton garnered another preseason accolade on Friday as he was named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List.
Payton was one of 55 players from across the country on the preseason watch list for the award that recognizes the top amateur baseball player.
The junior is the 16th Louisville player to be named to the preseason watch list and the first since Alex Binelas and Henry Davis were on the list in 2021. The Cardinals have had at least one player on the preseason list in eight of the last 10 seasons.
Payton led the Cardinals with a .350 batting average, 89 hits and 23 doubles in 2022. His 23 doubles were tied for the most in the ACC, while his 89 hits were the most by a Louisville player since 2016.
Louisville begins the 2023 season on Feb. 17 with a three-game series against Bucknell at Jim Patterson Stadium.
