
Cards Close Out 2023 at KTCCCA College Opener

The Cardinals won five events to kick off the indoor season.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track & field teams began the 2023-24 indoor season at the KTCCCA College Opener on Saturday at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.
"It was a very good season opener," said director of track & field and cross country Joe Franklin. "We had numerous athletes with lifetime bests and being at that point in December at the first meet of the year shows the progress they've made in their training."
On the day, the Cardinals claimed five event victories, set nine new personal-bests, and saw 11 student-athletes make their Louisville debut.
Trey Allen led the way with a win in the men's high jump, clearing a height of 2.24m (7-4.25), while Brion Stephens finished as the runner-up in the event with a clearance of 2.09m (6-10.25) and Paul Kallenberg took fifth with a new personal-best mark of 1.99m (6-6.25).
"Trey had an incredible jump at 2.24m with a very solid attempt at 2.28m," added Franklin. "I'm excited to see how he and the rest of the team continue to progress throughout the year."
In the men's long jump, Jeremiah Willis also picked up a win while setting a new meet record in the event of 7.58m (24-10.5), with Trae Burns placing fourth with a jump of 6.99m (22-11.25).
The Cards also found success in the women's long jump, as Synclair Savage claimed the silver with a mark of 6.17m (20-3) and Ariel Lawrence rounded out the top-five while tying her personal-best of 5.97m (19-7).
Sophia Day made her collegiate debut in the women's triple jump, bounding to a mark of 11.82m (38-9.5) to win the event. Autumn Bell placed third with a personal-best jump of 11.71m (38-5) and Riley Burger was fourth (11.62m (38-1.5) as Louisville placed three athletes in the top five.
Jenna Hensley secured the victory in the women's unseeded high jump, clearing 1.65m (5-5), while Aubrey Lane made her collegiate debut with a fifth-place finish at 1.50m (4-11).
The Cardinals also dominated the pole vault as well, led by Cade DeWitt's freshman record clearance of 5.23m (17-1.75) to place second, while Ty McPhail followed with the same height in third. On the women's side, Paris Bond tied for third in her first meet in a Louisville uniform, clearing 3.91m (12-10).
On the track, Louisville picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in the 60m as Jaylen Cole clocked a new personal-best of 6.78 in the men's race and Kiyah Yeast finished the women's race in 7.48. After placing second in the long jump, Savage finished third in 7.50 and Olivia Jenkins was fifth in 7.53.
Jenkins then came back in the women's 200m with a third-place finish in 24.91 with Ruby Nwosu finishing close behind in fourth in 24.97.
In the women's 400m, Taylor Boggess set a new lifetime-best of 57.10 to record a second-place finish.
The Cardinals also got a pair of top-five finishes in the men's 800m from two freshmen, as Jacob Puhalla was fourth in 1:55.10 and Colin Lakomek finished fifth in 1:55.60.
Louisville closed out the meet with a win in the men's 4x400m relay, as the foursome of Trevor Holbrook, Paul Kallenberg, Dominic Lowe and Cole teamed for a time of 3:16.31. In the women's 4x400m relay, the team of Boggess, Yeast, Nwosu and McKenzie Bell finished second in 3:42.61, which stands as the fourth-fastest time of school history.
The Cardinals will now turn their attention to Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial Invite, which will take place on Jan. 12-13 at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center in Louisville.
