Cardinals Dominate Long Jump on Day One of Rod McCravy Memorial Invite

Jeremiah Willis and Jake Burkey posted marks that currently stand in the top-ten nationally in the men’s long jump.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track & field teams wrapped up the first day of competition at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invite on Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals were led with a pair of stellar performances in the men's long jump as Jeremiah Willis and Jake Burkey earned spots on the podium with marks that currently stand in the top-ten nationally.
Willis won the event with a personal-best leap of 7.82m (25-8), the fourth-best jump in the NCAA on the young season, and Burkey placed third with a mark of 7.69m (25-2.75) that stands sixth in the nation.
The women's long jump was also kind to the Cardinals, as Synclair Savage placed fourth with a jump of 5.97m (19-7) and Lucy Fellows made her collegiate debut with a fifth-place finish after posting a mark of 5.93m (19-5.5).
Brion Stephens rounded out a solid day in the field for Louisville, placing fifth in the men's high jump after clearing a final bar of 2.08m (6-9.75).
On the track, Jaylen Cole moved on to tomorrow's 60m semifinals with a time of 6.82 in the preliminaries, while the sophomore also claimed sixth place in the men's 200m after posting a personal-best time of 21.36.
Paul Kallenberg also advanced out of the preliminaries in the 60m hurdles, recording a new personal-best time of 8.40 to punch his ticket to the semifinals.
The Cardinals saw three athletes etch their names into the record books in the track events, as Lauren Bettencourt placed fourth in the women's 1000m, McKenzie Bell finished sixth in the women's 600m, and Ryan Farrell took sixth in the men's 600m.
Bettencourt's 1000m time of 2:54.86 stands as the fifth-fastest time in program history, while Bell's 600m time of 1:33.31 and Farrell's 600m time of 1:20.23 moved them both to third on the all-time list.
Competition will resume tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. with the onset of the men's pole vault and women's shot put. Track events will begin at 12:00 p.m. with the semifinals of the women's 60m.
