Cards Take Down No. 10 Notre Dame, 33-20
October 08, 2023 | Football
Cards start 6-0 for the first time since the 2013 season
The Cardinals knocked off the Fighting Irish in front of a sold out crowd for just the second time since the stadium expanded in the 2019 season. With the win, the Cardinals remain undefeated and become bowl eligible.
The Irish opened up the game with the ball and Sam Hartman threw his first interception of the season to Quincy Riley. Following the pick, the Cards cashed in on a 9-yard touchdown and held the Irish to zero points. Louisville has outscored opponents 48-0 in the first quarter over the past seven games, its longest streak of holding teams scoreless in the first period since 1973.
The Irish evened the score before the half after a 36-yard touchdown reception.
In the second half, Notre Dame took its first lead of the night after a 53-yard field goal in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Cardinals responded on the next drive with a field goal of their own and tied the score at 10. The game was tied until Jordan busted loose for a 45-yard touchdown with five minutes left to regain the lead for the Cards at 17-10. Notre Dame added a field goal before the end of the quarter making it 17-13 heading into the fourth.
The Cardinals defense made a statement in the fourth quarter, forcing multiple turnovers and stopping the Irish on downs. Hartman threw two more interceptions, both recovered by Devin Neal.
With the Louisville offense on the field again, they were able to put the game away for good. Jordan gave the Cardinals some breathing room with a 21-yard rushing touchdown, his second of the night, to put the Cardinals up by double figures. Travelstead hit field goals on three-consecutive drives to put the game fully out of reach.
Louisville Head Coach Jeff Brohm Said:
"This was a huge victory for this team. A huge victory for this fan base. A huge victory for this university and all the leadership that does such a tremendous job of directing us in the right direction. Our fans were the twelfth man. We felt them. We felt them all week. I read Twitter (X) a little big and they were ready to go. They expected to win. They wanted to win. They came ready to win. So, I knew we needed to get them a win. They were fired up all week. They were fired up today. They were into the game. We played hard for 60 minutes. The game was close for a while. We hung in there and fed off our fans. I just think our players came out in the second half and understood what it meant not only us but to the entire town, city, and university to win. They grinded it out. They did some good things on defense, getting after the quarterback and making him feel uncomfortable, guarding receivers – we executed better in the second half. We had some big plays in the running game and were more efficient in the running game. We were more efficient in the passing game. We had the one fumble, but we are able to overcome it. Our special teams came through in the second half. I think it was a team effort. We are happy to be where we are at because it is a big win and we want to enjoy it. That is what excites us all. So of course, that is what I told the team, once you win a game like that the bar goes from here up to here. We want to enjoy it and relax and be around family and friends. Eventually we will have to get back to work and understand that people can say what they want after winning the game. But every week in college football, if you don't come ready to play you are not going to win. We are going to have to get back to work over 24 hours. It was a great atmosphere for our team and our fans to win that game. "How It Happened
