Mia Duchars’ penalty corner goal in the second overtime period lifts Louisville to a 2-1 win at Boston College
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Mia Duchars' penalty corner goal with 7:16 left in double overtime lifted the No. 12-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 2-1 win at No. 13 Boston College Friday afternoon at Boston College's Field Hockey Complex.
Â
"I'm so proud of our team right now. It's been a tough few weeks and we have worked hard to stay together and keep fighting and represent Louisville field hockey," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "Today we got back to playing our game, together as a unit. It was a competitive game against a very dangerous team. This should give us some confidence as we head into the ACC tournament."
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Boston College 13-6 with a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 10-4 edge in penalty corners. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 13-5 and finish the regular season with a 3-3 mark in ACC play.
Â
The teams battled through three scoreless quarters before Boston College (11-6, 2-4 ACC) broke through with a penalty corner goal from Peyton Hale to take a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Cardinals answered a minute later, capitalizing on their own penalty corner opportunity when sophomore Jane Ramsay connected on a feed off of the stick of Rylie Wollerton for the equalizer with 6:26 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Â
Neither team was able to register a shot in the final minutes of the game and with the score knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the contest moved to a 7v7 sudden-victory overtime period.
Â
In the first extra frame, Louisville outshot BC 3-1 and held a 2-1 edge in corners, but remained in a stalemate, sending the game to a second overtime.
Â
The final period saw the Cards earn an early penalty corner, but the BC defense withstood the first attempt, only for Louisville to earn its second corner of the frame two minutes later. Aimee Plumb's pass from the left post found Duchars who directed a shot past BC goalkeeper Caroline Kelly for the game winner.
Â
Louisville will prepare for the ACC Field Hockey Championship which will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 3 at Virginia's Turf Field. The complete bracket will be released later this weekend. Â
Â
NOTES:
• Friday's win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Cardinals.
• After its second straight game with at least one overtime, Louisville is now 3-1 in overtime games this season.
