UofL falls 2-1 to Appalachian State in their home finale
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The eighth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-1 to Appalachian State in a shootout Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Â
The Cardinals (12-5) will wrap up the regular season with an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Boston College Friday at 2 p.m.
Â
App State (12-4) got on the scoreboard first when Leah Hurwitz connected on an assist from Kassie Paul midway through the second quarter.
Â
After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Louisville regrouped and countered with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter when Julie Kouijzer sent a feed to Chloe Plumb, who steadied the ball and evaded a defender before firing a shot into the cage for the equalizer.
Â
In the fourth quarter, the Cards tallied three shots on goal – all turned away by Appalachian State's Addie Clark. The Mountaineers made one last run in regulation after a fast break down resulted in offensive numbers for App State in the circle, but Louisville goalkeeper Merlijn van der Vegt made a crucial save to send the contest into overtime.
Â
The teams battled through two sudden-victory 7v7 overtime periods with Louisville delivering 10 shots - five of which were stopped by Clark – and earned eight penalty corners, but were unable to capitalize.
Â
With the score still knotted at 1-1, the game entered a best-of-five shootout. Aimee Plumb and Emilia Kaczmarczyk converted their attempts, but Sophia Baxter, Grade Ball and Florine Koopman sealed the win for the Mountaineers.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Appalachian State 21-5 with a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal and held a 15-1 edge in penalty corners. Merlijn van der Vegt collected two saves while Addie Clark finished the game with 12 stops for the Mountaineers.
