Miller Crushes School Record to Wrap Up Cardinal Classic
January 14, 2023 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville's track and field team continued to rewrite the record books this season as redshirt junior Cameron Miller broke the 200m dash school record after also breaking the 300m dash record at the Commonwealth College Opener on Dec. 3.
Miller's time of 20.77 bested the previous record of 21.22 set by Isiah Pantiere last season and gave the transfer from Florida a new facility record, along with the event victory. He now has two school records in as many meets as a Cardinal.
Miller also helped lead Louisville to a third-place finish in the men's 4x400 relay as he was joined by Robert Joseph, Jesse Casas, and Isiah Pantiere to record a time of 3:15.94.
"We saw a great season opener for Cameron Miller in the 200 meters today and then he was able to come back and run a very intelligent leg in the relay," said head coach Dale Cowper. "He's showing that he is in position to be in contention at the championship level later this winter."
Along with Miller, three other Cardinals secured event victories while 11 athletes set personal best marks. On the weekend, Louisville athletes won seven events and recorded 22 personal records.
Trey Allen claimed his second consecutive meet victory in the men's high jump, clearing a height of 2.18m (7-1.75), while Brion Stephens again placed second with a mark of 2.15m (7-0.5). Luke Nichols rounded out the top three in the event with a clearance of 2.10m (6-10.75).
In the women's high jump, Soledad Jean cleared a bar of 1.78m (5-10) to earn a runner-up finish in the event.
Ty McPhail picked up his first victory of the season, winning the men's pole vault with a final height of 5.08m (16-8). Paul Kallenberg also found his way on the podium in the event, with his mark of 4.78m (15-8.25) tying him for third place and giving him a new personal-best vault.
"Our vertical jumpers once again stood out from the field with strong showings from Trey Allen and Soledad Jean in the high jump along with Ty McPhail in the pole vault," added Cowper.
Freshman Alba Cuns Iglesias was the third field event winner of the day for the Cardinals, winning the women's triple jump in 12.59m (41-3.75) for the first event victory of her collegiate career.
"Alba Cuns Iglesias was able to pick up the win in the women's triple jump and is showing that she has the capability of developing into one of the top young jumpers in the country."
The men's and women's 3000m saw seven Louisville athletes record personal records, led by Isaac Kiprop's runner-up finish in the men's race with a time of 8:17.76. Freshman Nolan Macklin also found success on the track, blazing to a fourth-place finish in the men's 200m dash with a time of 21.41 that was the third-fastest performance in school history.
A pair of top-five finishes marked the men's shot put for the Cardinals, with Bryan Hudson placing fourth with a mark of 17.49m (57-4.75) and Jorge Contreras Nazario coming in fifth place with a heave of 17.35m (56-11.25).
"I'm excited to see the way our groups came out and competed this weekend. We have some elements to clean up and some folks we need to see back in action, but this program is in a good position for early January."
The Cardinals will continue their homestand in two weeks at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational on January 27-28.
