Louisville took a 3-2 loss in Lexington on Tuesday.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 10th-ranked University of Louisville soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday night, taking a 3-2 defeat against No. 5 Kentucky in Lexington.
Playing in its first road match of the season, Louisville (3-1-0) got off to a hot start on Tuesday, netting the match's first goal in the 11th minute.
Sander Roed played a corner kick into the box that found the head of Josh Jones. Jones headed the ball toward the net that deflected off a Kentucky defender and into the net for the opening strike. It was the first goal of the season for Jones and Roed's team-leading third assist.
Kentucky (4-0-0) responded quickly, heading home a goal less than four minutes later to level the match at one.
A physical first half remained even at one, but the Cards nearly grabbed the advantage late in the half. Roed launched a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box that banged off the left post and stayed out in the closing minutes.
The Wildcats took their first lead shortly after halftime, jumping ahead 2-1 with a goal 93 seconds into the second half. After 27 more minutes of back-and-forth attacking, UK extended the margin to two with a third goal.
Louisville got back into the match in the 80th minute, as Damien Barker John collected his first collegiate goal. The freshman took a touch on the right edge of the box and blasted home a shot inside the far post to make it a one-goal deficit.
However, the Cardinals couldn't find the late equalizer on their way to their first loss.
Kentucky outshot Louisville 17-12 on the night with the corner kicks even at two apiece.
Louisville returns home on Saturday to open up Atlantic Coast Conference play against Duke. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
