September 10, 2022 | Men's Soccer
Louisville suffered its second straight defeat on Saturday night.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 10th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team took its second consecutive loss on Saturday night, dropping a 2-1 decision to seventh-ranked Duke at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
The loss is the second straight for Louisville (3-2-0, 0-1-0 ACC) against a top-10 opponent. The Cards have played a top-10 ranked team in three of their first five matches.
Saturday's opening half saw offensive chances on both sides. Sander Roed clanged a volley off the right post less than seven minutes into the match on the game's first scoring opportunity.
Duke (4-0-0, 1-0-0) had a clean look at goal in the 28th minute, but Bradley Sample tracked back and was able to save the shot off the line to keep the match scoreless.
Louisville finally broke through in the 34th minute with Nico Diaz working down the right side and sending a centering pass in front of goal. Konstantinos Georgallides got on the end of it and one-timed it inside the right post for his second tally of the season.
The Cardinals would carry the 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Duke controlled the possession coming out after the break and cashed in a scoring chance in the 54th minute to level the match at one.
Louisville then went back on the attack and had five shots over the next 10 minutes but was unable to find the net.
The two sides exchanged scoring chances for much of the second half before the Blue Devils found the eventual game-winner in the 82nd minute.
UofL got three more shots off over the final eight minutes but had nothing to show for them in the defeat.
Louisville outshot Duke 15-11 on the night, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on target. Duke finished the night with eight saves.
Louisville heads on the road for its next two matches, starting with a road match at Boston College next Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET in Newton, Mass.
