CHARLOTTTESVILLE, Va. – The fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-0 to No. 7 Virginia in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Friday afternoon at Virginia's Turf Field.
Â
The match, which was moved from 3 p.m. to 1 p.m. due to inclement weather in the forecast, saw Virginia take a 2-0 lead in the first quarter and holding on for the win despite a late offensive surge by the Cardinals (8-2, 0-2 ACC).
Â
The Cavaliers (6-3, 2-1) took an early lead in the third minute of play when Dani Mendez-Trendler notched the first of her two goals in the game. She struck again at the 11:48 mark in the first quarter to make the score 2-0.
Â
Louisville had an early chance to score, but Embry Jane Imorde's shot was turned back by UVA goalkeeper Jet Trimborn to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard.

Â

Overall, Virginia outshot Louisville 12-9 with an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal while the Cards held a 5-1 edge in penalty corners. Goalkeeper Sasha Elliott (8-2) collected six stops for the Cardinals.
Â
JUSTINE SOWRY ON THE MATCH:
"Very disappointed with how we started that game. We were conservative, passive and reactive and UVA took advantage of it. Yes, we had a better second half, but it was always going to be difficult to come back against a great team. Momentum did shift in our favor at times, but we were unable to capitalize on the opportunities that we're given."
Â
UP NEXT:
Louisville will continue its trek through Virginia with a Sunday matchup at VCU.
