September 23, 2022 | Field Hockey
Jane Ramsay registered her first career goal and then added another while Sasha Elliott collected three saves in Louisville's 2-0 win against Indiana
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Jane Ramsay delivered her first two career goals and graduate senior Sasha Elliott posted three saves as the fourth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Indiana 2-0 in the 11th annual Battle of the Border Friday evening at Trager Stadium.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 8-1 on the season while the Hoosiers drop to 6-4.
Â
After the teams played through a scoreless first half, the Cardinals broke through in the third quarter with a pair of goals from Ramsay in a three-minute span. Louisville would go on to withstand a late-game surge by the Hoosiers to preserve the shutout.
Â
Through the first two quarters of play, the Cards outshot the Hoosiers 6-1 with Indiana goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge collected five saves, including a stop on a penalty stroke attempt by junior Aimee Plumb in the first quarter.
Â
Louisville dialed up its attack in the third quarter, earning two corners and firing off three shots in the first five minutes of the frame before Ramsay connected on a feed from Plumb for her first career goal. Three minutes later, Ramsay struck again when she tipped a penalty corner shot from junior Mia Duchars.
Â
The fourth quarter saw a resurgent Indiana attack as the Hoosiers outshot the Cards 5-1 and earned five straight corners in a two-minute span, but Elliott posted two stops and the Louisville defense held strong to keep the Hoosiers off of the scoreboard.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Indiana 14-7 with a 9-3 edge in shots on goal and an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners. Elliott collected three saves while Lovenridge had six stops for the Hoosiers.

JUSTINE SOWRY ON THE GAME
"I'm pretty happy that we came away with a win. It was a very hard-fought contest against a very talented Indiana unit. They're an improved team with a lot of talent, and super speedy out front. In the first half we were a little conservative and a bit tentative. At halftime we challenged our group to press them a little harder, and if someone is going to press, we all must go together. You saw that pressure and energy really compound and we were able to produce a lot of turnovers to get some momentum back. It was a tale of two halves but at the end they had a bunch of corners where you saw again, we absorbed the pressure. At the end of the day, it was a great result."Â
