Cards score twice in the final 20 minutes to earn the win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville men's soccer team (3-0-0) scored two goals in the final 20 minutes of play to come from behind and defeat Seattle (1-2-0), 2-1, Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Facing a 1-0 deficit into the 70th minute, goals from Konstantinos Georgallides and Brandon McManus pushed the Cardinals to their third-straight win to begin the season.
It was a physical first half between the two teams and the Cardinals had the majority of high leverage opportunities throughout the first 45 minutes.
The best chance for the Cardinals came in the 43rd minute off a service from keeper Gavin Krenecki. The ball was played back to him and he lofted a through ball up to Eric Danquah, who made a run past the Redhawks defense. He collected the ball into the box and his attempt was saved by Kasim who had to come out of net to save the Cardinals chance.
The score remained 0-0 at the half and the Cardinals held a 10-2 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes.
Seattle broke through for the first goal of the match in the 52nd minute. Camron Miller's header off the corner found the back of the net and the Redhawks held a 1-0 lead.
Louisville pressed forward after conceding the goal in looks of the equalizer. That moment came for the Cardinals in the 70th minute and it got started by Macoumba Ba. He took a run into the box and crossed the ball back to Georgallides at the top of the box. He settled the ball and struck it inside the left post for the goal. It was Georgallides' first goal of the season and the score was tied at 1-1 with 20 minutes left to play.
The Cardinals continued to surge forward in the offensive third and took their first lead of the game in the 77th minute. Georgallides played it up to Nico Diaz, who was holding outside the top of the box. Diaz flicked it on for McManus who was breaking past the defenders into the box. It was McManus and the keeper and McManus slotted home the go-ahead goal to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
Louisville's defense held firm following the go-ahead goal and helped seal the victory. It was the second time this season the Cardinals conceded the opening goal but came from behind to win. The 3-0 start for the Cardinals is the best since the 2017 season, when they also began that campaign 3-0.
Up next for the Cardinals will be their first road game of the season as they travel down I-64 to take on rival Kentucky. The Cardinals and the Wildcats will square off on Tuesday, September 6, at 7:30 p.m. ET and the game will be aired on SEC Network+.
