Cardinals Down No. 10 Saint Louis in 2022 Opener
August 25, 2022 | Men's Soccer
Louisville tallied three unanswered goals on its way to a 3-1 victory.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 3-1 victory over No. 10 Saint Louis on Thursday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (1-0-0) surrendered the opening goal early in the first half but responded with three unanswered strikes to secure the victory.
Thursday's match was the first of seven for the Cardinals this season against teams inside the top 15 of the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll.
Saint Louis (0-1-0) found the back of the net first on Thursday, collecting a loose ball at the top of the box and putting it home nearly 17 minutes into the match. The shot was the only one the Billikens would get in the first half, and one of just five they had on the night.
Louisville answered 12 minutes later. Sander Roed played a pass down the right flank to Konstantinos Georgallides, and the freshman chipped a perfect pass to Macoumba Ba for the one-time finish off the inside of the left post.
The match remained level at one for the remainder of the half and neither side was able to break the tie through the first 20 minutes of the second half.
The Cards finally broke through in the 66th minute with Damien Barker John playing Aboubacar Camara through and Louisville's top scorer each of the last two seasons calmly placed the ball past the keeper for the eventual game-winner.
The goal was the 20th of Camara's career, moving him into a tie for 10th place all-time on Louisville's career leaderboard. Camara has tallied 19 of his 20 goals in his last 25 matches.
Louisville got on the scoreboard once more in the 75th minute, capitalizing on a set piece. Nico Diaz drove a corner kick into the box that was redirected by Bradley Sample, and Bryce LeBel finished it off with a strike into the upper right corner.
The Cardinals outshot Saint Louis 12-5 on the night and had four corner kicks to just two for the Billikens.
Gavin Krenecki earned his first career win in goal, allowing just the one score over 90 minutes.
Louisville returns to the pitch on Monday with a home match against Bellarmine. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
