Dukes Earns NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
July 28, 2022 | Rowing, Academic Services
University of Louisville rower Michaela Dukes, a senior Health and Human Performance/Biology from Independence, Kentucky, has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Â
The one-time non-renewable scholarships of $10,000 are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring). Each sports season there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships available for women for use in an accredited graduate program.
Â
Dukes rowed exclusively in the V8+ boat during the 2021-22 season. At the ACC Championships, she was in the V8 that finished 6th in the Grand Final after finishing third in their prelim heat. Against Michigan, she rowed the V8 boat that finished second with a time of 6:57.22. In the Lake Wheeler Invitational, she helped the V8 boat to two wins and a second place final. At the Sunshine State Invite, she was in the V8 boat that won its prelim race and then advanced to the Grand Final where it finished sixth. At Oak Ridge in the V8 boat, she helped the Cards to a third place finish of 11 teams in both the prelims and the finals. At the Rivanna Romp, she also rowed the V8 that turned in a 14:08.90 for 11th place.Â
All former student-athletes who earned an undergraduate degree from an NCAA member school are eligible to be nominated by that school for an NCAA graduate degree scholarship, regardless of when they received their undergraduate degree.Â
Â
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage graduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership are evaluated.
An equitable approach is employed in reviewing an applicant's nomination form to provide all student-athlete nominees an opportunity to receive the graduate award, regardless of sport, division, gender or race. In maintaining the highest broad-based standards in the selection process, the program aims to reward those individuals whose dedication and effort are reflective of those characteristics necessary to succeed and thrive through graduate study.
