Virginia's Nicola Lawless has been named the 2021-22 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year. A senior majoring in biology and cognitive science, Lawless helped lead the Cavaliers to their 12th consecutive ACC Championship last month. The London, England, native was a member of Virginia's Varsity Eight, which earned ACC Crew of the Year and won the conference title in the event.
Virginia led all schools with 18 student-athletes on the team, followed by Notre Dame and Syracuse with 12 each and Duke with 11. Louisville had nine student-athletes garner the recognition and North Carolina had seven. Boston College, Clemson and Miami each had six honorees.
A total of 13 student-athletes who earned All-ACC honors this season also secured spots on the academic honors team: Clemson's Lori Belanger and Rachel Twitty, Duke's Megan Lee and Sydney Johnson, Louisville's Caitlin Bentley, North Carolina's Alessandra de Vito, Notre Dame's Sara Clarin, Syracuse's Aphrodite Gioulekas and Hannah Murphy and Virginia's Lawless, Sonja Schlosser, Leia Till and Vivi Van Ingen.
Duke's Amelia Shunk, Louisville's Violette Legrand and Virginia's Lawless are three-time selections, while 38 student-athletes earned the honor for the second time in their careers.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
