Cardinals Come Up Short Against Syracuse in ACC Tournament
May 11, 2022 | Softball
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Louisville lost 2-0 to Syracuse in the first round of the ACC Softball Championship Wednesday afternoon at Pittsburgh's Vartabedian Field.
Â
The teams played through two scoreless innings before the Orange (26-20) jumped to a 2-0 lead behind Angel Jasso's two-out, two-run homer in the third.
Â
That home run would stand as the only scoring in the game as Taylor Roby and the Cardinals' defense held strong through the next four innings and retired six straight to end the game. Syracuse RHP Ariana Adams held the Louisville bats in check, allowing only one baserunner until Jenna Servi delivered Louisville's first hit of the game in the sixth.
Â
The Cardinals put together a scoring opportunity in the home half of the seventh when Roby reached on a fielding miscue and Kendall Smith followed with a walk. Pinch runner Mia Forsythe moved to third on Dylann Cravens' flyout to right field, placing runners on the corners with one out, but Syracuse reliever Kaia Oliver retired the next two batters to preserve the shutout.
Â
Roby (15-11) took the loss, giving up two earned runs on four hits and striking out two in a complete game effort.
Â
Adams (9-8) picked up the win, allowing one hit and striking out six in six innings of work. Oliver earned the save, registering one strikeout in one inning of relief.
Â
Louisville (27-25) will await the NCAA selection show which will take place Sunday at 7 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2.
