March 20, 2022 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team fell 2-1 to Georgia Tech in the final game of its opening ACC series Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium.
Â
The Cardinals (17-10, 1-2 ACC) will continue conference play next weekend when they hit the road to face No. 17/15 Clemson in a three-game series.
Â
The game featured a pitchers' duel with both teams combining for five hits in the contest. Chardonnay Harris took a no-hitter into the fourth inning and surrendered only two hits and one earned run in the game to go along with three strikeouts while Taylor Roby gave up one hit and an unearned run. Dylann Cravens and Rebecca Chung each recorded a hit for the Cards.
Â
For Georgia Tech (18-9, 2-7 ACC), Sophia Voyles got the win after holding the Cardinals to one hit and striking out five in 5.0 innings of relief. Blake Neleman allowed one hit during her two innings of work.
Â
The teams played through three scoreless innings before Tricia Awald's one-out solo home run put the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard in the fourth inning.
Â
Harris, Roby and the Cardinals' defense held Georgia Tech at bay, keeping runners out of scoring position until a leadoff double by Grace Connelly in the seventh. A Cardinal miscue on Kennedy Cowden's sacrifice bunt sent Connelly home to make the score 2-0.
Â
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard behind Rebecca Chung's two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the lead in half. Louisville would get no closer as a groundout ended the game with the final score 2-1.
Â
UofL had an early chance to score when Carmyn Greenwood earned a leadoff walk to start the game. A sacrifice bunt by Korbe Otis moved Greenwood to second and she took third on a passed ball. Kendall Smith was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with one out, but a fly out ended the first inning.
Â
