Gabriela Leon's School Record Leads Four Podium Finishes at ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday
February 25, 2022 | Track & Field
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Gabriela Leon broke the women's indoor pole vault school record for the second time this season with a runner-up height of 4.46m (14-7.5) to lead four podium finishes at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday. Each team stands in sixth place as the women recorded a point total of 24, while the men posted a total of 19.
Â
Leon previously set the program best mark on the same runway at the Hokie Invitational on Jan. 21.
Â
"Our team competed at a really high level with several individuals delivering top-notch performances in our first day of competition," said head coach Dale Cowper. "I am very proud of our overall performance and excited to continue what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive indoor championships in the history of the ACC tomorrow."
Â
Luke Nichols and Trey Allen rounded out the top-three in the men's high jump to earn the first two podium finishes Friday. Nichols shattered his previous personal best of 2.10m (6-10.75) with a second-place height of 2.17m (7-1.5), while Allen cleared the same height to finish third based his attempts. The mark achieved by both athletes ranks third in the conference, while Allen still holds the top ACC spot of 2.20m (7-2.5) after his performance last weekend in South Bend.
Synclair Savage collected the third podium finish with a personal-best clearance of 6.22m (20-5) on her final attempt to round out the top-three in the women's long jump.
Â
Jeremiah Willis, Katherine Coffey and Aliyah Welter continued the field success with All-ACC second-team distinctions. Willis recorded a personal-best mark of 7.74m (25-4.75) to finish fourth in men's long jump, while Coffey posted a heave of 19.36m (63-6.25) to place sixth.
Â
Welter cleared a season-best bar of 4.31m (14-1.75) to take fourth in the women's pole vault.
Â
"I was very excited to see Luke Nichols, Trey Allen, Synclair Savage and Gabriela Leon awarded with all-conference honors and Aliyah Welter, Katherine Coffey and Jeremiah Willis earn second team honors for their efforts in the field events today." noted Cowper. "It speaks to the hard work and preparation that all of our athletes have put in this season."
Â
On the track, Taylor Herbert, Kiyah Yeast, Sterling Warner-Savage each turned in qualifying times in their respective events to earn a spot in Saturday's finals. Herbert clocked a personal-best time of 7.36 seconds to place sixth in the women's 60-meter prelims, while Yeast recorded a personal-best time of 24.05 to close out the qualifiers in eighth in the women's 200-meter. Warner-Savage posted a time of 6.66 to finish fifth and advance in the men's 60-meter prelims.
Â
"Sterling Warner-Savage, Kiyah Yeast, and Taylor Herbert each executed at a high level today on the track to step into the final rounds Saturday and I am excited to see what they are able to do with their opportunities tomorrow." added Cowper.
Â
The Cardinals will kick off the final day of competition tomorrow at Rector Field House with the men's shot put at 12:00 p.m.
