October 28, 2022 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The eighth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team lost 4-1 to No. 22 Boston College in the final game of the regular season Friday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Â
Louisville (12-6, 1-5 ACC) took an early lead behind Aimee Plumb's goal in the sixth minute of the game, but Boston College delivered four unanswered goals, including a hat trick by Margo Carlin en route to the 4-1 win. Overall, the Cards held a 14-8 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in penalty corners, while the teams were even with seven shots on goal apiece. BC goalkeeper Emily Gillespie had six saves while Sasha Elliott collected three stops for Louisville.
Â
The Cards gained the momentum in the opening quarter firing off three shots in the first five minutes with Plumb tallying her team-best eighth goal of the year.
Â
Boston College (8-9, 3-3 ACC) answered early in the second quarter when Carlin evened the score at 1-1 with the first of her three goals. Three minutes later, she put her team on top 2-1.
Â
The Eagles struck again early in the third quarter as Carlin completed her hat trick, extending the lead to 3-1.
Â
The Cardinals intensified their attack in the fourth quarter, firing off seven shots and drawing five corners, but Gillespie posted two saves and Louisville was able to capitalize on the chances. Boston College converted on its lone penalty corner as Peyton Hale connected on assists from Carlin and Martina Giacchino, bringing the score to 4-1.
Â
Justine Sowry on the loss:
"Hats off to Boston College, who put together a fantastic game, they took care of their opportunities," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "For us, we're very disappointed in the result. We know we are more than capable of playing at the highest level, but if we don't bring our non-negotiables in our attitude, energy, effort and our consistency with that, we're not likely to be successful. We gave up soft goals on the defensive end and on the attacking end, we had more than enough opportunities to put Boston College under pressure, but we did not execute. So, back to the drawing board, but we know that we are more than capable of going on a run in the ACC tournament."
Â
Up Next:
The Cardinals earned the No. 6 seed in the ACC Championship and will take on the No. 3 seed in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Duke's Jack Katz Stadium. Â The complete ACC Championship bracket will be released on Saturday.
