October 14, 2022 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The seventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated No. 24 Duke 2-1 in an Atlantic Coast Conference shootout thriller Friday evening at Trager Stadium.
Â
The match saw the Cardinals tie the game at 1-1 with seven seconds left to play in regulation behind Julie Kouijzer's penalty corner goal. The teams would go on to battle through two scoreless overtime periods before the contest moved into a shootout.
Â
The Cards prevailed 3-1 in the best-of-five shootout as attempts by Katie Schneider and Kelsey McCrudden found the back of the cage and Emilia Kaczmarczyk's shootout goal sealed the victory. Louisville goalkeeper Sasha Elliott also came up big with three stops in the shootout, thwarting three Blue Devil attempts after surrendering a goal on their initial try.
Â
With the win, the Cards improve to 11-3 on the season and 1-3 in ACC play while Duke drops to 5-9 (0-5 ACC).
Â
The teams played through a scoreless first half before the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the third quarter with a goal by Alayna Burns.
Â
Duke held the lead well into the fourth quarter with neither team able to fire off a shot throughout much of the final frame in regulation. With 12 seconds left to play, Mattie Tabor earned a penalty corner. Aimee Plumb got the corner started and McCrudden provided the stop for Kouijzer who rifled a shot into the cage to even the score at 1-1 with seven seconds on the clock.
Â
The teams played through a pair of sudden-victory 7v7 overtime periods with the score still knotted at 1-1. The Blue Devils had a chance to put the game away when they were awarded a pair of corners in the second OT period, but Elliott turned back two shots to keep the score knotted at 1-1.
Â
The roller-coaster match, which lasted two hours and 39 minutes, featured a green card, two yellow cards and five replay reviews – three of which occurred during the shootout. Overall, Louisville outshot Duke 15-7 with each team landing six shots on goal while the Cardinals held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. Elliott (11-3) collected five stops – two of which came in the second overtime period. Grace Brightbill had three saves and Piper Hampsch (4-7) had two stops for the Blue Devils.
Â
Justine Sowry on the win
"What a game! We knew that we couldn't give up a soft goal, and we did give up a soft goal. But, we just kept fighting. We're pretty happy with the way we were playing, the way we were moving the ball. We definitely had a lot of those opportunities that didn't go in the back of the net. Defensively, we needed to apply more pressure than what we did, but thankfully, our penalty corner unit came up huge for us. About 10-12 seconds left in the game that put us into overtime. In overtime, we played pretty well, I believe we dominated. But, they got a couple of corners where they could have sent the game their way - I think they did a nice job. And then a very long shootout. Thankfully, (Emilia) Kaczmarczyk executed that very well."
