Cardinals Come Up Short at Boston College, 34-33
October 01, 2022 | Football
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Louisville football team came up short on the road against Boston College, falling 34-33 on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Cardinals held a five-point advantage heading into the final quarter but could not hold off the Boston College comeback. The Eagles regained the lead for good on a 26-yard field goal by Connor Lytton with just under two minutes remaining in the contest. On the ensuing drive, the Eagles defense forced four straight incompletions to seal the win.
Â
Prior to leaving the game due to injury, Cunningham threw for 186 yards and a touchdown on 19-of-28 passing and rushed 14 times for 52 yards and three touchdowns, all coming in the first half. This marks the second consecutive game that he has accounted for four total touchdowns, after also rushing for three scores and tossing one last week at home against USF.
Â
The defense was led by linebacker Monty Montgomery, who tallied seven total tackles, two sacks, an interception, and two forced fumbles on the day.Â
Â
Louisville Head Coach Scott Satterfield Said
"Give credit to Boston College and Coach (Jeff) Hafley. Those guys came out and did a great job getting some big plays on us. I think that was the difference of the game. Zay Flowers is a tremendous player. We knew that coming in. You got to have a guy underneath, on top (of him). He beat us a couple times on some post routes, and he had us on a reverse pass that he ends up taking down and going all the way to the one-yard line. Just made some great plays.Â
Â
Defensively, we got three turnovers in the first half which I thought was obviously a positive. Then we made some points out of that, so we're sitting in decent shape, even though we gave up those big plays. Then in the second half, another deep play there. And offensively, we lose a couple of guys. (Running back) Tiyon (Evans) ends up going out right there at halftime and then (quarterback Malik) Cunningham goes out right there towards the end of the game, and which obviously hurt. I think the bottom line is there were too many big plays given up in the pass game, and we knew that coming in, we had to stop that."
