
Leon Leads Cardinals With Win at PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track and field team wrapped up the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational with a number of impressive performances Saturday at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center.
"I am thankful for all of the officials, volunteers, support staff and our corporate partners at PNC that helped us put together an outstanding event today," said head coach Dale Cowper "This was an impressive competition across all events and we are excited to see our team continue to grow with the ACC Championships next month. We need to spend a little more time becoming more consistent in month of February, but this group is growing and continuing to make great progress."
Gabriela Leon shined once again in the women's pole vault, clearing a first-place 4.38m (14-4.5) to establish a new facility and meet record. Auriane Viola rounded out the top-three at 4.11m (13-5.75), while Aliyah Welter finished fourth at 3.96m (12-11.75).
The Cardinals continued their women's field success, placing two in the top-three in the women's long jump as Brooke Weimer and Synclair Savage each turned in personal best results and surpassed the previous facility record of 5.60m. Weimer's mark of 6.03m (19-9.5) finished runner-up, while Synclair Savage placed third with a leap of 5.98m (19-7.5). In the women's high jump, Styliana Ioannidou cleared the bar at 1.74m (5-8.5) to place third, marking her third straight medal finish this season.
Kiyah Yeast clocked a personal best mark of 24.44 to finish fourth in the women's 200-meter, while Je'Nyia Burton made her women's 400-meter debut with a fifth-place time of 56.44. The women's 4x400 meter relay of Katie Martin, Kiyah Yeast, Taylor Boggess, Taylor Herbert closed out the meet with a second-place finish of 3:45.91.
Sterling Warner-Savage took the first heat to advance to the men's 60-meter finals, where he posted a time of 6.69 to place second. In the field, Grigoris Nikolaou took second in the men's triple jump with a mark of 15.11m (49-7), while Luke Nichols finished runner-up after clearing a height of 2.05m (6-8.75) in the men's high jump.
Bryan Hudson and Cade Richeson earned a pair of personal bests in the men's shot put as Hudson recorded a throw of 17.57m (57-7.75) on his third attempt that placed him in sixth, before Richeson heaved 17.89m (58-8.5) to finish fifth.
Isaac Kiprop made his move to outside and overtook the rest of the pack over the final two laps to earn a personal-best time of 8:29.20 and win the second heat in the men's 3000-meter.
Louisville will be back on the road next Friday and Saturday, Feb.4-5 at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
